E-Learning Authoring Tools Characterized

E-Learning authoring tools are part of a larger organizational infrastructure and learning ecosystem which typically includes hardware, software, content delivery mechanisms, and processes that support the delivery and management of learning programs. This includes everything from hardware such as servers and workers’ desktop computers, software such as learning management systems (LMSs) and authoring applications, delivery mechanisms such as routers and network wiring, and services and processes such as systems administration and the help desk.

authoring_tools1Broadly speaking, an authoring tool is a software package which developers use to create and package content for delivery to end users.

More specifically, e-learning authoring tools enable trainers to integrate an array of media to create professional, engaging, interactive training content, and make use of digitized media assets, as well as learning objects from an existing course for reuse in a new one.

Typically, e-learning content developers integrate digital media including:

  • Text
  • Images
  • Animations
  • Audio
  • Video

…to create e-learning content and courseware.

Since the term 'authoring tool' is somewhat non-specific, many authoring_tools2programs can be considered authoring tools, including web editors like Dreamweaver, Flash, PowerPoint and even content platforms like Adobe Connect provide the facility to create learning content.

In 2003 Bill and Katherine Horton (E-learning Tools and Technologies, p.278) further refined this description and categorized the different types of tools into five domains of application (see Table 1) based upon the output that the tools are used to generate.

Category

Description

Course Authoring Tools

Expressly designed for creating e-learning. Such tools simplify the process of implementing instructional strategies, creating menus and navigation schemes, and authoring pages—without extensive technical knowledge.

Web Site Authoring Tools

Used in creating mark-up language (i.e. HTML, XML) for web pages, and linking them to produce entire websites. Such sites include courses, or material associated with courses. By including scripting, dynamic display effects, and connections to databases, these tools can create interactive e-learning content.

Testing and Assessment Tools

Used to create and manage assessments. These tools create true-false, multiple-choice, short-answer, text-entry, matching-lists, and other kinds of computer-scored tests. Some facilitate performance tracking and the ability to generate learner-related metrics and related reports.

Media Editors

Used for creating, editing, and "Web-readying" digital images, icons, photographs, animations, sounds, video, and other digital media used in e-learning

Content Conversion Tools

Used for transforming documents, presentations, graphics, audio, video, and other content to formats that can be used in e-learning and on the Web.

Web 2.0 Tools*

Used to facilitate communication, information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design, and collaboration on the Web. It has led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and web applications. Includes social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, mashups and folksonomies.

Looking at Table 1, you'll see that I’ve asterisked the bottom category; it's a testament to the evolution of web technologies over the six short years since Horton & Horton’s text was published, a whole new category of authoring tools has emerged, so in my view it's justified to add this Read/Write Web (or Web 2.0) tools category to their list.

Significantly, the lines between applications specialized for learning, and applications intended for other uses have blurred. In addition to using traditional e-learning packages, learning professionals and organizations are engaging with the authoring_tools3concept of using using more generally available communication media such as synchronous web conferencing, instant messaging, mobile devices, video conferencing,online documents (and document collaboration), application sharing, knowledge management tools, and e-mail for training.

These technologies can be used as stand-alone substitutes for traditional e-learning software, or to complement other learning channels and modalities. The advantage of using these types of tools is that support the ways the people in every organization and in every training situation already share knowledge: they have conversations, make presentations, perform demonstrations, make conference calls, and give lectures.

E-Learning Authoring Tools Guide 2009 Released: Some Meditations on the Nature of Information

The number of tools and technologies for online training continues to grow. Despite economies being mired in a recession, literally hundreds of e-learning content authoring tools, learning management systems, and learning content management systems are being offered in the marketplace.

BrandonHallAuthoring2009Brandon Hall Research, domain analysts for the e-learning industry and providers of information about tools, technologies, and best practices related to employee training and enterprise learning have just released a comprehensive new guide called Authoring Tool KnowledgeBase 2009: A Buyer's Guide to 120+ of the Best E-Learning Content Development Applications.

According to their press release, "the current edition of this online, database-driven KnowledgeBase contains 10-20 page profiles of 122 content development tools" including:

  • 65 products to create online courses
  • 26 products to create online tests and assessments
  • 20 products to create software simulations
  • 23 products to help you convert your legacy content to e-learning
  • 9 products to create non-software simulations
  • 8 products to create instructional games

They also include two online software applications:

  • A selection tool that helps you narrow your product search by filtering out the tools that don't meet your needs
  • A comparison tool to help you see how two similar products differ

I recently published an article called What's on your e-learning bookshelf? In it, I listed my shelf of “go to” e-learning texts. I've re-published the picture of my shelf below, so that you can see, right there in the middle, a text called E-learning Tools and Technologies by Horton and Horton.

In the early part of this decade learning and development professionals and educators found this text to be an invaluable reference resource. If you had a requirement to understand a new training modality or learning channel in a hurry (as many of us did in five or six years ago as we faster, better, and more integrated communications networks burgeoned) the Horton and Horton text was a good place to begin to find out about it. E-Learning_Tools_and_TechHowever, as we reach the end of the decade, the tools and some of the technologies in text (I have the first edition) is looking decidedly dated; Blogger.com was still owned by Pyra Labs; podcasting is not given a look-in in any shape or form. As far as I could discern through a brief search (on Amazon, Wiley Books Online, and Google Books), the 2003 edition is still in print.

The outcome of this is that while the text is still full of good advice, useful information, and valuable insight into topics associated with e-learning design, development and delivery, many of the products it highlights are deprecated (Authorware), redundant (GoLive), or changed beyond recognition (most products featured in the text). In my view this is where resources like the Brandon Hall KnowledgeBase come into their own. While, necessarily, the text and the information is not as rich as in the Horton and Horton book (see Figure 1 for a comparison between the layout of the two resources), it's competitive advantage is that is delivers bang up-to-date, regularly refreshed information, and a easy-to-use selection and comparison utility to choose and compare products.

In one sense, this is the threshold between the analog and digital forms of information delivery. Putting my cultural anthropology hat on for a moment, I would characterize this as a liminal state. Liminality has been described as "the place in between" (La Shure, 2009) infused with ambiguity, openness, and indeterminacy.

For example, as a university lecturer delivering a course on learning technology do I include E-Learning Tools and Technologies on the required reading list, or the more up-to-date Authoring Tool KnowledgeBase? How do I set a question on the information in the latter source as it is in one sense, just a list and description of products and their capabilities, with none of the context provided by the former text? Which is more "academic?" Does this reflect the text's accuracy? Is the cost ($795 annual subscription) of Brandon Hall membership justifiable for students, or people who just was occasional access to information, as opposed to about $40 for the out-of-date Horton and Horton text. How much is the information worth?

These are difficult questions to answer satisfactorily.

I have no doubt that over time, e-texts will become integrated into the mainstream of Kindle academic, professional, and consumer activity. Online libraries like MyAthens already provide access to a range of electronically-available materials for a nominal fee to the individual user as membership to institutions, universities, and libraries.

E-readers like the Kindle, and e-book software like Lexcycle Stanza (recently purchased by Amazon) are beginning to provide the facility to view electronic versions of printed texts.

Maybe this electronic means of access will become more generalized; I use Stanza on my iPhone and it’s changing my reading habits. Perhaps the current practice of hard- and e-texts being used in concert will become firmly embedded as the most effective method of using the old and the new. As usual, people will do what works for them, and the usual rules for adoption of innovations will apply.

Yet the question remains: How out-of-date is too out-of-date?

I think that my Horton printed text still has great value, especially in the context it provides for e-elearning-related technologies; yet I can't rely on it to provide current information about specific e-learning authoring applications. With over ten years experience in the learning and development industry, I feel competent to apply my well-developed critical faculties to find out what I need from the range of knowledge and information at my disposal. Could I make my tacit, hard-earned ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information available to some-one else? Probably not.

Adobe eLearning Suite Review on BDLD

Donald Clark has very comprehensively reviewed the new Adobe eLearning Suite (eLS) on his always interesting and informative Big Dog, Little Dog blog.

As you may recall, I posted on eLS when the suite was released, and while welcoming this addition the e-learning practitioners’ content development toolkit, I tempered my enthusiasm as follows:

Where I think Adobe missed a trick is that they should have released this package at least five years ago. While we can say that in the early 2000’s, the e-learning industry wasn’t as large a market segment as it is today, it was eLS_boxsubstantial enough. Certainly enough of a market segment to be a valuable revenue-generating stream for the company. Unlike DTP, graphical design, and video post-production (which were digitized evolutions of existing industries) e-learning was a whole new industry, a real-life child of the World Wide Web.

I’ll give with one hand and take away with the other: well done Adobe, great to see you’ve finally committed to e-learning; equally, an e-learning suite of tools is such an obvious addition to your product range that you should have done this years ago.

Very full-featured indeed: if I was starting work today as a learning and development professional and I was handed this set of applications as my courseware production platform, I would be very happy with it.

But don’t just take my word for it: here’s (a very highly abridged version of) what Donald Clark has to say:

It is a complete and tightly integrated solution for authoring rich learning content. …All-in-all the Adobe eLearning suite is a great product for designers, being that it is the first elearning suite.

His review describes the applications and functionality of the Suite in very good detail, and Donald uses his own experience of using the platform to throw further light on how the applications integrate to enable e-learning designers (“instructional designers, developers, and other learning specialists”) to create high-quality courseware.

Shooting Video for E-Learning Use – eLearning Guild

I recently posted on integrating audio with e-learning authoring tools, and in the near future, imageI’ll be covering some aspects of the visual aspects of creating e-learning content, focusing on creating video for application demonstrations and using still imagery in e-learning.

In the meantime, the eLearning Guild have just published an informative primer called Making a Demonstration Video for E-Learning Use.

The article in Learning Solutions e-Magazine discusses a favorite of mine: straight-forward ‘How-to’ video demonstrations. The authors, Steve Haskin and Tim Martin describe this learning modality:

“How-to” instruction is an important training modality; in fact, “learning how to do things” is the cornerstone of being human. Our lives are spent learning how to do things, and this doesn’t stop simply because we “learn” in the workplace or even when we slip the “e-” in front of learning.

In this context then, tasks and activities can be elucidated using a number of video based approaches including:

  • Sequenced still images
  • Video
  • 3-D animation

Video photography is basically light captured on a medium like film, video tape, or DVD. image However, lighting a subject properly is something of a black art and if done poorly will undermine the learners’ ability to interact with the subject matter. The article’s authors discuss the basics of lighting in reasonably good detail, including key-, fill-, and back lighting, as well as color temperature, and new lighting technologies like fluorescent and LED light types.

They go on to describe the importance of a good tripod, and what you should look for in a video camera. I would agree with their assertion that HD cameras “are complete overkill” (p.7) and in fact that good old reliable MiniDV digital tape is still the best video media choice for e-learning practitioners – your content is captured as uncompressed DV-AVI video (so it can be edited and rendered in either NTSC or PAL as well as in various compressed formats), and MiniDV is a great archive format.

The authors conclude by discussing the pros and cons of various video codecs, their benefits and disadvantages.

Video can seem technical, overly-involved, and even intimidating to the novice videographer: I suggest that you have a look at the article if you want a good introduction to video for e-learning and if you want to know your blondes from your redheads. (They’re types of light: I wasn’t being rude!)

Macintosh Rapid E-Learning Authoring Software

Is there a rapid elearning or screencasting production tool for the Mac? A contributor to my post Capture that E-Learning Demo: Update, asked me:

We have been looking at both Camtasia and Captivate for our online development. My question is if you have knowledge of ANY Apple compatible capturing software with the same capabilities of Camtasia and Captivate? Or if either Adobe or Techsmith ever plan on making this available to the Apple community?

Two great questions centered around the notion that there is no screencasting killer app for the Mac. Now, I have a Intel-chip MacBook (it also runs Windows using Boot Camp), but I use Windows PCs for learning content development and production – it’s a work / life balance thing. As a result, I have never really considered the options for e-learning authoring on the Mac before now. But since I was asked, here’s my two cents worth…

There are a number of choices. First, you could run the programs you're evaluating (TechSmith Camtasia or Adobe Captivate) on a Mac with Windows / Boot Camp, but my view would be given the processing resources needed to generate content in a native Windows environment, running them via a virtual machine would be to enter a world of pain I’m not prepared to contemplate: there are too many links in the chain; it’s too risky. Murphy’s Law says that on a death march project with a deadline looming, the the authoring environment would not be up to the task, regardless of how well it behaved prior to to that.

With that option rejected let’s look at the other choices available for the MacOS. To answer my correspondent’s second question first, it seems that TechSmith are looking at a mid-2009 release for the Mac version of Camtasia. Not so good, I’m sad to say for Adobe fans. According to The Apple Blog there are currently no plans to bring it to the Mac. When questioned, the Adobe development team responded:

Captivate is built from a program that ties deeply into the core Windows. To bring it to the Mac would require a total rewrite, something that we’re not sure we can justify at this point. If we had significant interest from Mac users, it’d be a different story.

Next, the third of the "Big Three" rapid e-learning development authoring tools, Articulate similarly does not support MacOS natively. However, in a very comprehensive post here, guest blogger Jim Gritton (co-founder of GB Learning Consultancy) discusses

Parallels Desktop for Mac, followed by CrossOver Mac and now VMware Fusion. Both Parallels and Fusion are Windows emulators: they use virtualization technology to allow you to run Windows as a virtual machine alongside the Mac operating system, as you can see from the screenshot below:

While it may seem contradictory that I discuss an emulator here, Articulate is a little different, in that it can interact with Mac-native KeyNote-created presentations and even integrates with the Mac Dock (via Parallels).

Obviously more optimistic than me (see Death March above) Jim asserts that:

If you’re wondering about my set-up, I’m currently running Parallels Desktop with Windows XP on a 20-inch, all-in-one iMac, sporting a 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor, 1 GB memory and a 240 GB hard disk. This isn’t the fastest or most powerful Mac on the block, but it isn’t the slowest, either. I’m not going to pretend that running Windows applications using Parallels is as fast as running Mac applications natively on my iMac, but it’s no slouch. Nor has it let me down.
One approach that seems to me to have some potential is CrossOver Mac, which builds on the open-source implementation of the Windows API, Wine. This enables Unix-based operating systems (like Mac OS X and Linux) to run Windows applications “natively.” Hmmm... might look in to this myself, but it breaks my "Macs are for fun" work / life balance rule, in a thin-end-of-the-wedge kind of way...

What are we left with? Quite a lot, as it turns out.

In terms of native MacOS screencasting Mac, the evidence of my research suggests that Telestream’s ScreenFlow is the most popular application.

Motion

ScreenFlow introduces actions to the editing interface. These make it very quick & easy to modify parameters of your screencast over time. For example, adding a video action lets you put zoom & pan effects on your clips, while the audio action lets you adjust volume at different points in your screencast.

Export Quality

When resizing high resolution screen content into a QuickTime movie, ScreenFlow uses custom GPU algorithms to give your finished movie the best possible quality. You'll find even small text suddenly becomes legible for your viewers.

Leopard Only

ScreenFlow was built for Mac OS X Leopard. It makes extensive use of the best of Mac OS X technologies: Core Animation, QuickLook, Spotlight, QTKit, Quartz Composer, OpenGL, Core Image, Automator, Core Data and many others.


In the multiplatform world, Qarbon’s offering ViewletBuilder seems to have potential. This product seems to have some powerful e-learning features including LMS integration.

  • Benefit from its multi-platform solutions Windows, Linux & Mac

From the open source world SWF Tools is also available for the Mac. SWF Tools is a collection of SWF manipulation and creation utilities written by Rainer Böhme and Matthias Kramm. It is released under the GPL.
Features included are:

  • PDF2SWF A PDF to SWF Converter. Generates one frame per page. Enables you to have fully formatted text, including tables, formulas etc. inside your Flash Movie. It's based on the xpdf PDF parser from Derek B. Noonburg.
  • SWFCombine A tool for inserting SWFs into Wrapper SWFs. (Templates) E.g. for including the pdf2swf SWFs in some sort of Browsing-SWF.
  • SWFStrings Scans SWFs for text data.
  • SWFDump Prints out various informations about SWFs.
  • JPEG2SWF Takes one or more JPEG pictures and generates a SWF slideshow.
  • PNG2SWF Like JPEG2SWF, only for PNGs.
  • GIF2SWF Converts GIFs to SWF. Also able to handle animated gifs.
  • WAV2SWF Converts WAV audio files to SWFs, using the L.A.M.E. MP3 encoder library.
  • AVI2SWF Converts AVI animation files to SWF. It supports Flash MX H.263 compression. Some examples can be found at examples.html.

SWFTools has been reported to work on Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, HP-UX, MacOS X and Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista.

If you want to experiment with a ‘lite’ authoring environment for the Macintosh, try free-to-use Jing (by TechSmith).

Jing lacks many features that proprietary screencasting software has, including local saves, multiple output types, and delivery formats, but it’s free to use, so a restricted function set should be expected. Once content is captured and saved, a URL for the file is automatically created and can be shared with others to view or access.

So there you have it. A whistle-stop tour of content capture and rapid e-learning authoring tools for the Mac. I would be very interested to hear how Mac users fare with these applications, or can suggest any others that are used in this context on the MacOS platform. What really surprises me is that there aren’t more tools already, after all, the Mac is the doyen of the digital media development industry and I would have thought that the tools available for e-learning development would reflect this preference for the platform. But that’s another story.

Given the number of positive comments I have made about TechSmith recently, I want to emphasize that I am in no way associated with them, and that the purpose of this blog is not to showcase or cheerlead any commercial interest. It just happens at the moment they seem to make the most effective tools in this market space. I would suggest to their competitors that they step up to the mark and compete with applications that really meet the needs of learning and development practitioners and I will certainly be pleased to discuss their solutions in positive terms. Equally, should anyone fall short of the mark (MPEG4 or FLV, anyone?) I will highlight it on the E-Learning Curve Blog with no prejudice.

If you’ve read The E-Learning Curve Blog recently, you’ll know that I have been creating quite a number of demos over the last seven weeks or so. Undertaking this activity has inspired me to write about some “back to basics” e-learning topics (including my recent evaluation of Camtasia and Captivate), and today I’m going to address the question “OK, I have my content, how do I upload it to an LMS?”

But first a (sort of) digression…

I facilitated a conference on Third-Level Distance Education and E-learning in late 2008. We covered many topics during the proceedings, including

  • Online Teaching and Learning
  • The Economics of E-Learning
  • Assessment in On-line Education
  • Impact of E-learning

Now don’t get me wrong – all of the above are highly interesting and useful topics, and I’ll talk ‘til the cows come home on any or all of them. My favorite part of these events however, is where I introduce and guide the audience through some hands-on e-learning content generation using any one of a number of content authoring tools.

To show (sometimes skeptical) participants just how easy it is to do this, I present a two-hour workshop called How to Create E-learning in Just Four Mouse Clicks (‘Four Clicks’ for short, in honor of the similarly-named Led Zeppelin song) …and as this is the digression I’m not going to elaborate any further on the Four Clicks workshop.

So digression over: once you have your e-learning content, what next? Well, you can always play it from your PC or Mac of course, but what you really need to do is load it into an environment where the audience can access it, which means placing the content on a Learning Management System (LMS) like one of the flavors of Blackboard.

Uploading content to an LMS is easy, but it’s not intuitive. Computers are obvious and logical. The logical and obvious approach is to pick through all of the ShockWave Flash (SWF) files, find the largest one (because that contains the content – right?) and use the Browse feature of your LMS to upload the content.

This inevitably ends in failure, because there’s more to distributing learning materials online Adding_Presenter_Files_to_Blackboard_MHC260109 that just the content (I’ll talk about IMS manifests, specifications and metadata in the future). In fact, the process is quite straight-forward, and I could outline the steps here – that was the original intent of today’s post, but on reflection, I considered that it would probably be more useful if I created a PDF “How To” guide that you could download and keep close in your “My Useful E-Learning Stuff” directory on your local drive, to pull out when you need it, rather than trying to find the instructions buried in a blog entry.

For the purposes of this document, the presentation is created in Adobe Presenter, and was uploaded to Blackboard, but the process is common across most authoring tools and delivery platforms.

Adobe (finally) release eLearning Suite

We’ve all been using Adobe products for years. Even the most non-techie “I-can’t-find-the-Any-key” computer user almost certainly has the Flash Player installed in their browser; if you’re an learning professional of my vintage (30’s) you’ve probably encountered Authorware, Director, and Flash at some point in your career. More recently (as discussed on The E-Learning Curve Blog last week) Adobe have contributed significantly to the adoption of Rapid E-Learning through the ongoing development of easy-to-use tools like Captivate (currently on version 4) to enable learning and development pros create content without having to be a competent or proficient coder or media expert.

Finally, Adobe have recognized that like graphics, DTP, and digital / video media production, e-learning is a significant market vertical for their applications, and have released the Adobe eLearning Suite (eLS). According to their website, eLearning Suite

…software integrates best-of-breed tools for rapid eLearning, courseware authoring, simulations, and media editing. Create rich, imageinteractive learning experiences that engage audiences with video, audio, and powerful visuals. Work productively with rapid authoring tools that deliver smart collaboration features as well as tight integration with asset-creation tools. And deliver content to the web, the desktop, mobile devices, and Learning Management Systems.

Quite impressive – if I was starting work today and I was handed this set of applications as my content development toolkit, I would be very happy indeed. Similarly, as you can see from Figure 1 (below) the Suite’s workflow plays to the strengths of the individual applications. I would assert that this workflow is industry-standard practice, as already implemented by most e-learning developers worth their fee, so no surprises there.

However, where I think Adobe missed a trick is that they should have released this (or a similar) package at least five years ago. While we can say that in the early 2000’s , the e-learning industry wasn’t as large a market segment as it is today, it was substantial enough. Certainly enough of a market segment to be a valuable revenue-generating stream for the company. Unlike DTP, graphical design, and video post-production (which were digitized evolutions of existing industries) e-learning was a whole new industry, a real-life child of the World Wide Web.

Think of the opportunity they had to build a loyal and growing customer- and user base if they had released this suite in 2002, and you’ll realize what they let slip through their corporate fingers. As it stands, learning professionals in the past had to build their own toolkits: at this stage I’m not going to change from SoundForge to Soundbooth, for example, or from DocBookXML and XXE to Acrobat Pro - but I will of course keep using Captivate, Flash and Dreamweaver.

So I’ll give with one hand and take away with the other: well done Adobe, great to see you’ve finally committed to e-learning; equally, an e-learning suite of tools is such an obvious addition to your product range that you should have done this years ago.

SlideShare makes PowerPoint a little more Web 2.0-friendly

If you’re a regular (and dedicated) reader of The E-Learning Curve Blog, you’ll recall that in did a compare / contrast between authorSTREAM and SlideShare some months back. At the time I concluded:

So which service is better? Well, I guess that comes down to WIIFM - what's in it for me. The broad sweep of features and functionality are pretty similar on both services: deficiencies in one are accommodated by lack of functionality in the other, so it really comes down to personal choice.

My user experience of authorSTREAM was slightly superior to that of SlideShare: upload and conversion times were lower on the former service, for example. Equally, the enhanced slide animation and transition support on authorSTREAM was a positive advantage, as was the ability to view presentations in full-screen mode via a third party environment (my blog in this case). I also prefer the extended functionality afforded by the desktop-based client client, as well as the better audio integration.

In the end... well, I recommend that you try both out yourself, and you decide which service meets your needs.

Since then, both services have been nice enough to keep me up-to-date with developments in their respective apps. As you can imagine, most of these updates are incremental changes in slideshare_logo functionality, better app stability, and so on, but the latest update from SlideShare really excited me.

As an inveterate user of PowerPoint Add-ins (Camtasia, Presenter, PowerManual etc) I find the facility to generate e-learning content from within an authoring application to be an essential component of the Rapid E-Learning production process. As it happens, I’m presenting at an event tomorrow where my e-learning “wow factor” will be How to Create E-Learning Content in Four Mouse Clicks; and a PowerPoint add-in is an important part of that narrative.

You can now generate e-elearning objects in PowerPoint and publish them to the SlideShare website, using the new SS ribbon add-in. This looks like being a very cool tool indeed, and if I get all my shopping done, I’ll install and test over the next few days.

Open source e-learning courseware development - Salasaga update

As I've discussed in the past, there's a whole constituency of e-learning courseware developers who, for either practical, philosophical, or even purely financial reasons have decided to create learningsalasaga_linux-0.8.0-alpha1 content using open source and free-to-use courseware.

One of the tools I looked at in the past is an open source Integrated Development Environment for producing e-learning called Salasaga. According to the author it will be

a free, easy to use GUI authoring environment that helps you create visually impressive and actually useful learning material. The short term goal for this project is to provide such an environment, and we're well on the way to a first release for doing that.
Initially similar to Adobe Captivate, but will eventually incorporate an AJAX (browser based) playback capability for advanced content. Flash has at least one serious design limitation (from [his] POV) making it nearly useless for comprehensive e-learning, and this appears to be addressed by the existing capabilities of AJAX in browsers these days.

Today, I just received an e-mail from Justin Clift, the developer behind the IDE. He updated me on the latest developments with the tool; primarily that it's in Alpha 4 version at the moment, and that going to included in Ubuntu Intrepid. He's excited.

In my view, any tool or utility that enables a wider range of people to access e-learning, whether as learners, or as in this case through leveraging the means of production can only help the future growth of e-learning as a means of educating the widest possible group of people.

iPhone m-learning content authoring

If you're a regular reader, you'll know that I recently posted on The Mobile Segment of the Learning Marketspace - new report. In that post, I discussed the outcomes of the Elearning Guild Report on the topic.

Well, since then, I have becomes the happy owner of an Apple 3G iPhone (a screenshot of my wallpaper is displayed below) and so I've been searching for an authoring tool to create some content for delivery via iPhone.

Now you may know that the Flash Player is not yet available for the iPhone, which leaves content developers like me in a quandary; how to deploy courseware on the device:

  • for immediate implementation
  • that can be refactored as SWF / FLV formatted files when Adobe and Apple agree to release a version of the Flash Player for iPhone

After quite a bit of research, I've found two authoring tools that that may enable learning professionals to create e-learning content for distribution on the iPhone, yet won't require content authors to develop the content as an extra product stream on top of their ongoing deliverables.

cs_logoThe two tools I am going to investigate are Techsmith Camtasia Studio, and SumTotal ToolBook Instructor 9.5 Beta. I will evaluate each product (and their associate production processes) over the next few toolbook_logodays. In the meantime, here (courtesy of SumTotal) are a few handy hints to consider when you're at the pre-production phase of developing learning content for mobile devices:

  1. Limit Graphical Content
    With the tight mobile device screen being roughly a twelfth (or smaller) of a desktop screen, large-screen graphics not only increase load times, but also take up valuable space that is needed to display text, hyperlinks, and other important information.
  2. Text Considerations
    Text should be limited – brevity is the soul of wit. Layout should be structured to avoid the need for scrolling. This involves breaking up text into smaller pieces/sections and linking to those smaller pieces, instead of putting a lot of text on one screen. Smaller fonts are also recommended. For example, Microsoft Windows Mobile standard is Tahoma with a point size of eight, which is an appropriate size for text viewed in the Apple iPhone’s Safari Web Browser.
  3. Limit the use of Data Entry
    Since the keyboard is a limited size, input fields should be kept to a minimum to reduce the amount of typing. Where possible, provide possible text or phrases to avoid needing the user having to type. These text items should have a hyper-link associated with them to serve as an easy way for users to select them, rather than their having to type them on the keyboard.
  4. Utilize Screen Space
    Avoid excessive horizontal and vertical spacing between screen elements. Unlike designing a print ad or brochure, you don’t need a lot of “white space” on the mobile device’s screen.
  5. Place Non-Essential Links at the Bottom of the Screen
    Hypertext links that are not relevant to the information being displayed should be placed at the bottom of the page to preserve space. This places critical information in the user's view upon entry to the screen or page. For example, a navigation menu that would normally be on the left or top of the screen of a desktop computer should be placed at the bottom of the screen for a mobile device.
  6. Media Consideration
    Another matter of importance is the types of media – audio and video – delivered. Generally, this is specific to the mobile device. For example, Windows Mobile devices typically support MPEG and MP3 files, whereas the iPhone currently supports QuickTime and MPEG MP4.

In general, developers should consider the goal of delivery of information via a mobile device. Not all types of information, media, and training materials lend themselves to this channel. With careful planning, content developers should be able to craft and deploy a wide variety of content to help those learners who are on the go.

Rapid E-learning Authoring Tool - PowerManual Demo

You may recall this post where I discussed a new Rapid E-Learning authoring tool I was beta-testing for a friend.

If, like me, you've spent extended periods of time creating manuals from other media formats, you'll appreciate the hard work and, to be honest, tedium involved in generating, formatting, proofing, and finally producing documentation to accompany ILT and WBT courseware. However, it's a necessary task, and generally something I just get on with doing, usually with a certain bad grace (if I can't delegate it to an intern or other downtrodden junior contributor).

In my first post on the topic, I suggested that the utility tool simplified this repetitive, time-consuming, and error-prone activity: in my estimation, it cut production time of documents converted from PowerPoint presentations by 80%.

An Introduction to Rapid E-Learning Authoring Tools

I've been having a little bit of fun over the last few days.

A friend of mine is developing a very cool tool that will enable courseware developers to easily convert their presentation content into neatly-formatted MS Word documents for distribution to learners. If, like me, you've spent extended periods of time creating manuals from other media formats, you'll appreciate the hard work and, to be honest, tedium involved in generating, formatting, proofing, and finally producing documentation to accompany ILT and WBT courseware.

However, it's a necessary task, and with much grumbling and gnashing of teeth, something I just get on with doing. So anyway, this little EXE file arrive in my inbox a few days ago with some installation and how to use instructions.

Top Tip
Kids - Don't go installing EXEs that arrive in your inbox unless you know exactly what they contain!

I went ahead and installed the program - still in early beta, remember and... it worked! It does exactly what every utility tool should do - simplifying or automating a repetitive, time-consuming, and error-prone activity: in my estimation, this app cuts production time by 80%.

I'll talk more about this program when it's released.

Top 10 Tools for Learning: Is Workplace Learning Really Still 1.0?

A fascinating debate has developed around Jane Hart's Top 100 Tools for Learning: The Bamboo Project has responded with a commentary called Looks Like Workplace Learning is Still Web 1.0.

First of all I want to congratulate Jane on the effort she has put in to creating this fantastic resource for learning professionals. Her analysis provides a useful overview of the 'state of the art' in tool use in the learning industry and I would suggest highlights the different, maybe even contrasting demands of workplace learning and learning in formal institutions.

Moreover, Jane has provoked a lively conversation about the two approaches taken by commercial organisations and educational/academic institutions; it's not often that we hear people post phrases like "I'm... frankly bothered" (Michele Martin at The Bamboo Project) in the 'learning professions blogosphere' - maybe not often enough.

I've reproduced the two lists of Top Ten Tools (see Table 1) from C4PT for comparison here.

The debate that these lists have provoked can be summarised in these key points:

• Workplaces still use a predominantly Learning 1.0 paradigm
• Jane Hart asserts that her analysis demonstrates that

[content] is formal, traditional (Learning 1.0) approaches (i.e. content-based courses, tutorials, etc).

• This manifests itself through what Michele Martin calls the use of a

"push" mode of learning, pushing content to learners, and are focused on creating more structured, formal learning experiences.

This leads to a more "solitary" learning experience for users in the workplace environment. At an organisational level she maintains, this approach reinforces the notion that this is an objective activity imposed upon passive users, rather than a process of active, ongoing engagement that learners have in terms of their personal development and the knowledge and skills enhancement of their colleagues and organisation.

Interestingly Jane notes that workplace learning professionals, while focusing heavily on commercial tools for the development of formal learning solutions - "seem to be using free tools for their [...] personal use."

Educators and academic institutions,

on the other hand, are making use of more Web 2.0 tools, like YouTube, Flickr, Wikispaces, Ning and Voicethread, all of which invite commenting, content co-creation and interactivity.

• By "embracing" Web 2.0 tools, institution-based educators are "creat[ing] more social, collaborative and informal approaches to learning."

What a great discussion!
Before commenting on any of the above, I have to declare an interest in that I am a workplace learning professional, but I have just completed an MSc in Education & Technology and am familiar (as of 2007) with the use of learning technologies and tools in third level institutions. I also contributed to the C4PT survey in March 2008, and my Top Ten list is a 60:40 split between commercial and open source tools: I use both.

In my view, the debate that I have just briefly summarised represents a number of talking points in the learning community:

  1. The differing demands of workplace and formal institution-based learning
  2. The resources available to commercial and academic organisations
  3. Learners' needs in the workplace and in formal learning institutions
  4. Personal philosophy applied to learning

1. The differing demands of workplace and formal institution-based learning

Upon reviewing the two lists, the first thing that struck me was the broad equivalency of functionality across the tools represented in the lists (see Table 2):

Now read on...

Based on the evidence that 75% of the tools in the two categories enable learning professionals to undertake the same activities, but using different technologies (or in the case of tools like Jing, the same technology, just a "lite" version of a commercially available tool), we can say that learning professionals have more in common than they have separating them.

In this context, the development of training programmes and learning initiatives using commercially available (can I say 'industrial strength'?) authoring tools enables learning professionals to deliver content (hosted on an LMS like Moodle for example) to learners in an efficient and effective manner. Based upon my own experience and the observations of others in this field, I would assert that while there is a element of organisational "push" in delivering content to workers, once learners are aware that content is available for them asynchronously, they will integrate these resources into their own personal development patterns.

From the learning professional's perspective, tools like Flash, Captivate, and Articulate have a number of advantages: they are mature, stable products. They enable the development of content across a range of pedagogical methodologies and production processes. Product licensing ensures that learning and support resources are available if needed.

Similarly, organisations require that content be stored on a LMS/LCMS platform, which means that the content must be interoperable with other learning resources, which means that content adheres to learning specifications like SCORM and AICC. Open source products may or may not adhere to these specifications as closely as commercial products. Certainly platforms like Ning, Wikispaces and Flickr do not meet these requirements; what's interesting is that Moodle does, and it is represented in both Top Ten lists (actually higher in the workplace list). Moodle supports blogs, wikis, and discussion forums - all the aspects of a social-constructivist approach to learning. Again from experience I know that these functions are used in the workplace to support learning as well as to enable workers to interact with each other, share knowledge and develop skills. The popularity of Moodle in both lists also suggests to me is that learning professionals in both camps (as it were) desire a stable, integrated platform to host their learning programmes.

Both Michele and Jane are powerful advocates for lifelong learning using social media tools. However, the reality of the commercial environment is that organisations develop products using proprietary technologies, processes and knowledge. Working in such an environment I will tell you straight that there is no way on God's green earth that I would publish corporate learning content, demos or courseware on anything as unsecure as Ning, YouTube, Flickr or Wikispaces where competitors could, by accident or design, access such content. As an alternative, such materials, as well as blogging, knowledge-sharing and social interaction activities take place 'behind the firewall' using tools like Moodle, SharePoint, Lotus Notes or equivalent enterprise solutions. The reality is that commercial organisations charge customers for learning resources and they are not going to sacrifice being an 'earning organisation' to become a purely 'learning organisation.'

As this is the case, I have to dispute the position that social, collaborative and informal approaches to learning only take place in more academic environments; I would certainly say that such activities are more visible and accessible.

2. The resources available to commercial and academic organisations

Another key differentiator between the commercial and academic environments is that broadly speaking, commercial organisations tend to have more resources (i.e. in-house expertise, large ICT departments, money) at their disposal. Certainly if a company has enough employees to merit implementing network-based learning solutions, they can afford to licence enterprise-level solutions that integrate with their HRM and/or CRM solutions. I would suggest that these systems would not necessarily be in the list of nominations submitted by workplace-based learning professionals in the C4PT survey. I know that when I submitted my top ten, I was conscious of the fact that not everyone reading the list would have access to some of the tools I could have mentioned, so in some cases I omitted choices that would have been there in other circumstances. So, for example, I chose to include Audacity rather than SoundForge - both do the same job equally effectively, but the former is open source while the latter will set you back about $300.

3. Learners' needs in the workplace and in formal learning institutions

The learning needs of knowledge workers are different to those of students in formal learning institutions. Knowledge workers' roles and responsibilities direct the way they plan their activities, execute their tasks, and how they reflect upon their actions once tasks (or components of larger-scale tasks) are complete. Further, knowledge workers (unlike academics, for example) are typically required to apply their skill- and experience assets in real-world situations which exhibit degrees of uncertainty about both the situation itself and the desired outcomes. Much of the real-world job of the knowledge worker is more concerned with problem setting, then problem solving. To move from a problematic situation to an actual problem, the practitioner must “frame the problem: …determine the features to which they will attend, the order they will attempt to impose on the situation, the directions in which they will try to change it. In this process, they identify both the ends to be sought and the means to be employed” (Argyris, C. and Schön, D., Theory in practice: Increasing professional effectiveness 1974, p.165). This requirement plays a role in how learning professionals strategise and implement learning solutions for knowledge workers.

Learners in formal learning institutions acquire knowledge for different purposes and in a different way. The purpose of studying and learning in an academic environment is to explore current knowledge, to research, to explore, to be involved in discursive activities. The goal requires either using a different set of learning methodologies and approaches, and commensurately a different set of tools and technologies, or using the same tools in a different way. I think that both options are represented on the Top Ten List: I have illustrated the equivalencies in the toolset above. But given the purpose of learning in this environment, we can say that there are good reasons why tools including Ning and Wikispaces are represented on the formal educational institution list, as these tools facilitate the types of discourse I have just described.

4. Personal philosophy applied to learning

This category is perhaps the most interesting of all: for this is the heart of the debate. And I chose the word "heart" deliberately. I think that it's fair to say that most people involved in learning care passionately about communicating ideas, concepts, knowledge to others.

What is important is that so many people care enough about how we mediate knowledge and ideas to be motivated spend time and effort to discuss this topic in this forum. In my view, that is the most positive outcome of using these technologies to share ideas.
